Correspondence to a member of the public misusing the address of Adam Bernard Solicitors Ltd and the name of the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
What is the scam?
An email has been sent to a member of the public from someone using the name 'Adam Bernard', who describes himself as a representative of the 'UK Immigration Unit for Nannies, Au Pairs, Babysitters and private workers'. The email was sent from the email address 'ukvisaimmigration@consultant.com' and misuses the head office address of a genuine firm of solicitors (see below). The email purports to be arranging documentation for a prospective Au Pair, who is living abroad, to work in London, and indicates a deposit payment may be required.
Amongst the documents is a supposed consent form for a Criminal Record Check misusing the name of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).
The SRA does not authorise or regulate a solicitor by the name of Adam Bernard.
Any business or transaction through the email address referred to above is not undertaken by a firm or solicitor authorised and regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Adam Bernard Solicitors Ltd. The firm's head office address is 25 Barking Road, Upton Park, London, E6 1PW. The genuine firm uses the email domain @adambernards.co.uk.
The genuine firm of Adam Bernard Solicitors Ltd has confirmed that it has no connection to the above correspondence.
The SRA also has no genuine connection to the correspondence referred to in the above alert.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
